According to the GCB poll in 2004, almost
100% of the GC population wanted the GCCC sacked. The council
then spent large amounts of money on weekly reports in the
media, on advertising and on brochures to restore public
confidence in the council and councillors.
The results of the GCB poll in June 2005 showed that it
had not succeeded with its efforts since 98.7% of the population
still wanted the GCCC sacked.
Regardless of the views of the voters, the Council wasn't
sacked.
FOBA’s view:
- the Council decision making process must be more transparent
and responsive to the community
- the current council has done many good things;
the main areas of controversy are the intentional misleading
of voters in the last election, the Lionel
Barden Trust Fund, inappropriate developments (if
any) and inappropriate relationships between councillors
and
developers (if any)
- however, given current infrastructure problems, too many
developers are allowed inappropriate development “relaxations” against
the wishes of the local community
- local community groups should be advised of all applications
in their division for relaxation by developers
-
appropriate and sufficient infrastructure should be in
place before any applications for relaxation are allowed
which adversely affect infrastructure
-
information on successful applications for relaxations
which are contrary to the wishes of the local community
should be made available to the public by the GCCC
-
members of the public should be allowed to know which
developers have applied for relaxations, how many have
they applied for, what was the community reaction to
the
applications and how many were successful. Currently,
they are forbidden access to such information
- developers and real estate agents should not be allowed
to donate to candidates' funding
- all candidate funding over $100 should be declared
- the glass petition between the public and the councillors
whould be demolished
- councillors educational qualifications should be available
to the public
